Holy moly you guys. Didn’t we JUST say goodbye to 2015?! How on earth are we already entering 2017? While I thought this year would go by slowly with Zack being overseas for the majority of it, this year really seemed to fly by. Like REALLY fly by. I look back on all the amazing memories for this past year and each and every one of them feels like they just occurred yesterday rather than months ago. It was a crazy, busy year around here. While I hate to wish my life away, I am more than ready to move into a new year. 2016 was full of so many great memories, but it was also full of some really challenging moments and changes as well. And after an incredibly stressful past few months, I’m definitely ready to start over and move forward.
Since this is the last week of 2016, I thought it would be the perfect time to look back on this past year at all the amazing memories and accomplishments we had throughout it. So here are the highlights from our life in 2016.
OUR YEAR IN REVIEW…
We started off the year with Zack heading back to Japan the first week in January. It was tough, but it helped knowing it would be our final goodbye before he was home for good again. the rest of the month was spent trying to get back into a routine after the busy holiday season and having Zack home for a few weeks.
In late February, Zack deployed to Korea, making March another challenging month for us. We lucked out being able to talk a lot more than we had anticipated, but for some reason, it was so much harder having him in Korea than I had anticipated. We were still long distance, but not knowing when I’d get to hear from him sucked.
In April, I turned 24 and my sister turned 17 that very same day. We were so thankful to have been able to celebrate our birthdays with both sides of the family. They truly made this birthday amazing. I also started my internship with the Portland Sea Dogs this month which led to an incredible summer where I met some amazing people. This was the first step in my career and I was so saddened to leave it behind in August. I still would love to go back to this company in the future if we end up back in Maine someday.
In May, I finally graduated with my Bachelor’s degree in Communications and Public Relations from Southern New Hampshire University. A degree I had worked so hard on for so many years. It felt amazing to walk across that stage and receive my diploma. I wish so badly that Zack could have been there with me, but I know he was proud of me. That same day, I watched my younger sister get her bachelor’s degree as well and that night, my baby sister went to her junior prom. It was a long day to say the least.
June was a typically summer month. Lots of late nights, worked a lot, spent a lot of time at the pool and sipping on wine. It was a good month. In addition to these perfect summer days, Zack finally got promoted to sergeant at the start of the month. This is a promotion he’s been working so hard for and was long overdue at that point. I couldn’t have been more proud of him and I know it was a pretty emotional and exciting moment for him as well.
In July, I went on an amazing trip to New York with my family. We go every summer for a golf tournament and to visit my grandparents and this was the first year where we had my stepmom and stepsister with us as well. It was a great weekend full of drinks, delicious food, family, and even white water rafting which had been on my bucket list for as long as I could remember. It was the perfect final weekend with them before Zack returned home.
In August, I finally got my husband back. 245 days without him was way too long. It was an amazing feeling to finally have him back home with me and to be able to continue our life together. We instantly began trying for our first baby. A few weeks later, I said goodbye to my amazing coworkers at the Sea Dogs as the 2016 season came to a close. It was bittersweet. On one hand, I was excited for the next step in my life with Zack, but at the same time, I was crushed that I had to leave a company I truly loved working for. Lastly, I started my graduate program this month as well. If all goes as planned, I’ll be graduating November 2017! It’s so exciting to be so close to being done with my education.
September was a huge month for us. Not only did we move cross-country from Maine to California, we also found out we were expecting our first baby in May. It would have been more of an exciting moment if we hadn’t been living in a motel at the time, but we still so thrilled when we found out the news. We also had the opportunity to be present at my dad’s wedding and celebrate the occasion with our family members. The perfect final weekend in Maine before we moved. Lastly, we finally moved into our new home here in California. It was a rough first few weeks here considering we were living in a motel and running out of money, but it felt so good to move into a house together again and start rebuilding our home.
In October, we celebrated 3 years of marriage. I almost felt like this was a bit of a checkpoint. Three years really isn’t that long, but we’ve been through more in those three years than some couples go through in a decade or longer. It was a challenging first three years of marriage. So it felt amazing to finally be able to look back on our extended rough patch and think “wow, we made it”. Now, I couldn’t possibly ask for a more amazing and stable marriage. I am so thankful for the life and relationship that we have. There’s no one else I’d rather do life with.
In November, we attended the Marine Corps Birthday Ball here in San Diego. It wasn’t as much fun as our last ball due to the simple fact that we have ZERO friends here and I couldn’t drink with being pregnant, but I’m still so glad we have the chance to get dressed up together and go. I always love being able to get dressed up and look nice with him. We also celebrated Thanksgiving in our new home, just the two of us. I cooked Thanksgiving dinner for the first time ever AND I didn’t ruin any of it which was quite an accomplishment for me. I was thrilled.
This month, we celebrated our final Christmas as a family of two. This was SO bittersweet. We really had the perfect Christmas together. It really couldn’t have been better. But I am so excited for next year’s holiday celebration as a family of three.
WHAT I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO IN THE NEW YEAR…
I am so unbelievably excited for the new year and everything that’s to come. We’ll be welcoming our first baby in May and hopefully seeing a good majority of our family in that time as well. We’ll be celebrating our 4 year wedding anniversary in October. I’ll be completing my master’s degree as long as everything goes as planned there. I’m hoping to grow this blog even more and focusing on my career in sports. Zack and I will both be turning the big 2-5 in a few months which is bittersweet. I feel like it’s all downhill from there.
There’s so much to look forward to in 2017 and I am more than ready to move on and see what else this year has in store for us. These next few years are going to be busy around here, but it’s going to be an exciting type of busy. And I’m ready for them!
How was your year? What are you looking forward to in the new year?
