What’s In My Diaper Bag?

What's In My Diaper Bag? | KeatingBartlett.com

When I was putting together my baby registry, the very first item I saved was my diaper bag. While I had no idea what products I wanted for our own daughter, I did know that I did NOT want a typical diaper bag. It’s just not for me whatsoever. I wanted a bag that would go with every outfit and match my personal style. So I picked out the bag that I thought would be perfect for me. Two weeks in, I had just about had it with that bag. Like for real. It was horrible. The bag itself just weighed way too much so by the time you add in everything a baby needs, you’re left with a bag that literally hurts to carry. So I was pretty disappointed that my original bag didn’t work out because I really was super excited about it.

Next, I decided to try out my Michael Kors bag. I LOVED this bag so I really felt it would be a better option. Well this one only lasted a handful of outings. Rather than being a big open tote type of bag, it had a divider inside, creating two separate compartments. And this was an issue. The divider got in the way and I just couldn’t carry nearly as much as I needed to carry. Even sticking with the basics, it was too small. So then began the hunt for the perfect bag.

I spent weeks on Google and Pinterest and watched SO many videos on YouTube to see what bags everyone was using and how they were keeping them organized. After a TON of research, I somehow got my heart set on the Louis Vuitton Neverfull GM…which is a pretty pricey bag. Especially for someone who just had a baby. So I was a bit disappointed there but I was determined to have it. So I hopped on Poshmark to see if anyone was selling a one. Of course many people were selling their Neverfulls, but they were still so pricey. At that point, I might as well have just spent the extra few hundred dollars and gotten one brand new. But after keeping an eye on the listings for a week, one finally became available at a price that I was more comfortable with. I was thrilled and to make up for the price, I actually put both my Michael Kors and my diaper bag on Poshmark to sell. This also made me feel better about spending the money on a new bag.

In addition to the Neverfull, many bloggers and Youtubers were using Totesavvy by Life In Play. This is another slightly pricey item but I was completely sold on it after seeing how everyone was using theirs to keep their Neverfulls neat and organized. It instantly became an essential in my mind. So I bought both the Neverfull and Totesavvy and the combination has been perfect. Seriously. I have no idea how I managed to go her first six weeks of life without them. But I’ll talk more about Totesavvy in another post.

So enough about the bag; what’s in it? Some of these items vary depending on where we’re going and how long we’ll be out so this is kind of the max of what would be in my diaper bag. Everyone’s diaper bag essentials will vary from person to person, but here’s what I keep in mine:

FOR BABY:

  • A couple backup outfits (these items will vary depending on the weather and/or where we’re going)
  • Her sunglasses (she actually loves these!)
  • Extra diapers and travel wipes (both are by The Honest Company)
  • Multiple pacifiers
  • A baby bottle with extra inserts (we use the Playtex Nursers)
  • Formula dispenser (I only carry this when we’ll be out all day)
  • A bottle of water to mix her formula
  • A bib and burp cloth
  • Toys and/or stuffed animal

FOR ME:

  • My Michael Kors wallet
  • Car keys
  • A couple pens
  • iPhone
  • Snacks
  • Water
  • Lip stain / makeup
  • Rose Salve lip balm
  • Sunglasses
  • Hand lotion

MISCELLANEOUS:

  • Diaper bags
  • Changing pad
  • Tide-to-go
  • Pacifier wipes
  • Baby powder by Johnson & Johnson (if you know of another brand that makes minis of baby powder please let me know!! I really hate Johnson & Johnson and just haven’t been able to find a mini by Burts Bees or The Honest Company or anything like that. So I’m looking for recommendations!!).
  • The Honest Company Honest Mineral Sunscreen
  • Burt’s Bees Diaper Rash Ointment
  • Cue tips
  • Termometer
  • Nail clippers
  • Nail filer
  • Tylenol
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Wet Ones
  • Hand and face wipes

I was a little worried that the Neverfull GM would be a bit too big, but I am SO glad I got the GM and not the MM (the medium version of the bag). This bag literally holds everything. I highly recommend it to new moms if you’re able to splurge a bit or find a used one online. If not, then another great option that I found is the Michael Kors Carryall, which I actually think has been discontinued. I found this one on Poshmark as well (and bought it before I found the Neverfull so I currently have both!) and this one is another awesome option if you’re able to find one! It’s probably about the same size as the Neverfull MM and works great as well!

So I’d love to know what diaper bag you all chose for your little ones. What bags do you recommend and what are your essentials?

  • Super cute! I registered for a gender neutral backpack style bag from Little Unicorn. That way I can just throw it on and Tyler isn’t weird about carrying something “girly.” I’m definitely going to be getting something like the Totesavvy so I can organize baby things in my purse for when I’m on the go and don’t want to carry the backpack!

Like you said, after a while you realize the things that you just don’t need at all. We have diapers, wipes, extra clothes, nose sucky, formula/bottle when we are out all day, and that’s it. We realized that some things were just taking up room and we never ever used them.

  • You could empty the johnson and johnson one and fill it with burts bees 🙂

  • What size Totesavvy do you use for the large Neverfull?
