Easy Ways to Simplify Your Life In The New Year

Easy Ways to Simplify Your Life In The New Year | KeatingBartlett.com

The new year is the perfect time to simplify your life and move forward with a clean slate. I began doing this a couple years ago and it makes entering a new year so much less stressful. Rather than being tied down from everything that happened the year before, I’m free from the clutter and ready to start fresh. Don’t get me wrong, there are always some amazing memories being left behind when you enter a new year. But by the end of the year, we tend to have a rather cluttered life. So if you’re in need of some easy ways to simplify your life in the new year then continue reading!

This needs to be done way more often around here. Does anyone else here just collect random things throughout the year? Paperwork, random bills that have already been paid, owners manuals to electronics you no longer own, memorabilia from high school that you didn’t even know you still had, clothes that no longer fit, makeup and even food that’s long past their expiration dates. It’s horrible! But it’s also so easy to get into the habit of hoarding these things. Most times, you don’t even realize you’re doing it. So I challenge you to go through every single room in your home and start tossing. If that item doesn’t bring you joy or if you didn’t know you had it or it’s something you haven’t touched in months or even years, then get rid of it! You’ll be amazed by how much space you have in your home when you’re done.

I touched upon this in the last point, but pay extra close attention to your closet. I’m not big on the capsule wardrobes that everyone is loving right now, but at least go through your closet and get rid of clothes that don’t fit you anymore. Stop holding onto your size 2 pair of jeans from high school, hoping you’ll one day fit into them again. Chances are, they’re only making you miserable. If it doesn’t fit, toss it.

Next, throw out any clothes that are ripped or stretched out or have holes in them or anything along those lines. I know it’s an investment to update your wardrobe, but do not hold onto these items if they’re looking old and gross. I don’t care if it’s your favorite top. I’m sure you can replace it with a top that doesn’t have a hole in the side.

And lastly, toss the clothes that just don’t fit your style anymore. As women, we’re constantly growing and changing out personal style as we get older and there’s nothing wrong with that. If the clothing is still in good condition, then donate it.

Once you’re done, you should be left with clothes that no only fit you, but clothes that you love as well. And please don’t forget your lingerie drawer either! Bras, panties, socks, leggings. The same rules apply!

Seriously peeps. Do it. I promise you’ll feel so much better. I am the queen of Facebook deleting sprees and I swear by them. Start out easy. Go through the Facebook groups you’re in and delete the ones that are nothing but drama. You know you’re in some. I just removed myself from every military Facebook group I was in because it was pure craziness. I had a friend add me to them a while back because she thought I could help some of the newer spouses and for a while, I was. But nowadays you can’t help anyone without them getting offended or freaking out over your opinion not matching theirs. It’s insane. Completely insane. And being a 24 old married adult with a rather successful, good life, the  last thing I need is to get caught up in teenage drama. So I said goodbye to those groups very quickly. I also removed myself from a couple blogging and business groups for surprisingly similar reasons. It’s sad. Groups like that are made to be supportive and offer others a place to ask for help and they’re just pure craziness these days.

Next go through your Facebook friends. This seems to be a more challenging one for some people. It used to be hard for me as well because it made me feel bad to remove people from my friends list. I didn’t want them to be mad at me. But once I got myself to do it for the first time, I felt amazing afterwards. Absolutely amazing. It was like a giant weight had been lifted of my shoulders. So now I stress the importance of this to others.

Here’s who to delete: Anyone you don’t talk to or don’t even know in person, get rid of them. If they’re clogging up your newsfeed with negativity or content you’re just not interested in, remove them. And if you just plain don’t like them then why keep them around?! Why do we do this?! Why do we add people just because they sent us a friend request or keep people around just because they used to be a friend or because we don’t want them to be mad at us for deleting them. You’re not obligated to add everyone nor should you feel bad in being selective in who you keep around. Surround yourself with positivity in the new year!

This is another challenging one for some. It took me a while to get comfortable with it as well. But man is it nice when you’re finally able to say ‘no’ without feeling guilty for it. You owe no one an explanation for your choices or your reasoning behind not wanting to do something. Don’t feel that you have to say ‘yes’ simply because you don’t want to let someone down. Just because it’s a close friend or family member, doesn’t mean you have to be open and willing to do anything and everything they want to do. If you simply don’t want to do something or you have a lot going on and don’t have time in your schedule to take on more tasks, then say ‘no’! Your mental health will thank you later.

This is another tough one for some people. It’s tough for me as well. But in order to truly grow as an individual and put your own needs first, you absolutely have to stop caring what others think about you or your life choices. Not everyone is going to like you. It sucks, but that’s just how it is. And not everyone is going to agree with the choices you make or your opinions and thoughts. Again, it sucks. But there’s nothing you can do about it. Only you know what’s best for you and your life so be sure to always focus on you. Don’t let anyone hold you back this year!

How you take this will vary from person to person. For me, letting go means learning to accept the things you cannot change and letting go of negativity and anything else that makes you unhappy. If it does not bring joy to your life, then why carry it into the new year? This can be anything from a job, a friend, or even a task or commitment that you’re just not into anymore. It can be virtually anything that you can possibly think of. Be selective in what you carry into the new year no matter how hard it is to let certain things go. And as for negativity, no one has time for that! The new year should be a positive one.

This is high on my list of priorities in the new year because I’m always connected in some way, shape, or form at all times. 90% of the time, it’s because I’m doing something for this blog, but it’s just not healthy after a while. Set aside some time in your day to fully disconnect from technology. Go for a technology-free walk or leave your cell phones behind for a weekend getaway with your spouse. Take a long hot shower or bubble bath or enjoy an hour of yoga. Do something to be present in your everyday life and take a break from the internet and everything in it to reconnect with yourself. Take the time to fully enjoy your life and be with the people around you. I challenge you to do this for one hour every single day this new year.

How are you simplifying your life in the new year?

  • Yes to decluttering! It feels so good!

    • Doesn’t it?! I’m constantly trying to declutter my life haha especially when I’m feeling extra stressed out. Chances are, it means something has to go.

    • I’m so guilty of constantly taking on more than I should. Thanks to anxiety, I can get overwhelmed super easily sometimes. So it’s been really important for me to learn how to say no and/or ask for help when needed. I’m so glad you found this post helpful! 🙂

  • Samantha

Great tips! Going on a facebook deleting spree is in my near future.

    • Thanks Samantha! I do Facebook deleting sprees once every few months and they always feel amazing haha you don’t realize how much even your Facebook feed affects your life and everyday mood.

Stop caring about what other people thought was a huge turning point in my year. I struggled with this one for years.

    • That one is so challenging sometimes. It used to be really important to me that EVERYONE likes me. But not everyone does haha and that’s okay. It’s so much easier to live your life and make your own choices when you stop caring about what everyone else is going to say about them.

Great tips, thanks for sharing! I really need to review my Facebook account, it’s very chaotic and I spend a lot of time on useless things…
    Happy New Year!

YAS! Toxic people have no room in your life! I had some fall out of my life this year and I’m so glad to move into the new year without that negative energy! Happy New Year!

    • I lost a few this past year as well. It was tough, but man have I seen an improvement since then. You really don’t notice how much they bring you down and prevent you from truly living. I don’t regret removing them one bit.

  • oh the toxic peeps are the life drainers and the clutter for sure. Thank you for the encouragement. I have already done the declutter of stuff, so the next step is to make sure my relationships are strong healthy and life giving.

    • I’ve been a huge fan of decluttering friends these past few years haha my husband only surrounds himself with good, positive and supportive people so when I married him, I felt I needed to be doing the same. I don’t regret it one bit. Some friendships were hard to let go of, but at the end of the day, it was very much needed.
